Essay

The phenomenon of laughter and irony in the European culture and its role in the formation of critical attitude to the reality is considered. In this context the concept of romantic irony developed by F.Schlegel is being analysed. The tradition of formation of the ironical attitude to the world in Ukrainian spiritual culture of XVI-XVIII centuries. Manifestation of romantic irony in Ukrainian romanticism is analysed on the example of works of Ivan Kotlyarevsky, M.Hohol and T.Shevchenko.
