The characteristics of the philosophical teachings of A.Schopenhauer and S.Kierkegaard are studied in the dissertation as well as the main factors which stipulated their peculiarities are defined and analysed. In the dissertation the problem of suffering is developed through the notion of crisis, disease, melancholy, despair and pessimism. The problem of suffering is particularly stressed in ontology, anthropology, ethics, axiology and soteriology. It is pointed out that A.Schopenhauer and S.Kierkegaard were one of the first in Europe who carried out the transfer of the problems of sociocultural phenomena onto the personal level, alongside with the search of the person for the essence of life.
