Essay

The dissertation is the first in the Ukrainian historiography complex research of life and many-sided activity of L. Bykovskyj, as well as culturological problems of his historical and culturological heritage. The work analyses the state of the scientific research of the problem, it draws a wide circle of scientific sources, which study the life of the scientist as a historian of Ukrainian culture. On the basis of scientific and memoirs' work the author of dissertation characterizes the participation of L. Bykovskyj in Ukrainian socio-political and cultural movements at the beginning of XX century, discovers his role in the scientific and organizational activity of Ukrainian Diaspora, especially in the formation of organizational bases of Ukrainian scientific institutions in emigration, as well as characterizes his proper scientific activity. The author of the dissertation reproduces the idea of book culture of L. Bykovskyj, who was one of the first who founded the science about book with the purposeof solving problems of culture creation that were actual for Ukraine, gave theoretical grounds for book lore, library lore and bibliography. The work determines the influence of L. Bykovskyj on the development of Ukrainian culture in the first half of XX century, restores in the historical context not only unknown until now facts of L. Bykovskyj's activity, but also proves that, in spite of his life condition abroad his homeland, he always was an active figure and popularized Ukrainian culture.
