The thesis is devoted to the issue of improvement of operational reliability of locomotives by introduction of the rational maintenance system taking into consideration their technical conditions. In order to obtain the rational overhaul period values, a mathematical model has been developed and the axiomatic-models-based procedure of choosing the locomotive maintenance system has been elaborated. The determination of overhaul period values, which ensure meeting the reliability requirements and minimizing the repair expenses, was conducted taking into account the evaluation of influence of the planned preventative maintenance system on the related expenses the locomotive reliability.
