Essay

The concentration of matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP-1) was investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and zymography in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 153 patients with various neurological disorders. High MMP-9 concentration was determined in CSF of patients with infectious diseases of nervous system. The concentration of MMP-9 in liquor correlated with CSF cells count and was higher in diseases with granulocyte infiltration of CNS (bacterial meningitis) and less pronounced in the patients with mainly lymphocyte pleocytosis (viral meningitis). In the patients with demyelinating diseases MMP-9 levels in CSF was considerably low (< 6 ng/ml). The concentration of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 was significantly increased in serum of patients with all neurological diseases. The changes of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in serum of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are shown depend-ing on current of diseases, treatment and other. The criteria of efficiency treatment patients with MS and predict development of exacerbation MS is offered. The recommendations are given concerning prevention of exacerbation MS.
