Essay

This work carried out a scientific generalization and systematization of the results of predecessors' and contemporaries' researches concerning the problems of the urbanization process on the territory of Galicia (Halychyna) during the period of industrialization and development of architecturally-planned structure of individual cities. The general methodology of the research is based on the post-factor analysis and on revealing the factors of development of the urbanization process, which are classified as town-planning and laying-out. On the basis of numerous sources, including statistics, and the chosen methodology, the cities of Galicia were classified, the rate of their growth was determined, and a group of cities was identified, which gained impetus of development (Berezhany, Brody, Drohobych, Horodok, Yavoriv, Kalush, Kolomyya, Lviv, Sambir, Snyatyn, Stanislaviv, Stryy, Ternopil, Zolochiv) during the period in question and where new theoretical design concepts were embodied. Dependence was established of development of architecturally-planned structure of cities on prerequisites that formed in this region from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century: external (town-planning) factors - functionally administrative, communicative (road and railway systems), economically industrial, demographic; complex nature factors with signs of external and internal influences - building law, stylistic conceptions; internal (laying-out) factors - development of a city traffic, a building substance, an engineering improvement. Local and regional "Building Statutes", based on general principles for the whole Austro-Hungarian monarchy, played an important role in linking the building character of Galician cities with today's states of Central Europe. There were determined common tendencies in development of architecturally planned structure of Lviv as a capital of the royal country from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century with other European capital cities when resolving the problems of transitional period from a medieval city to an industrial one. The division into periods of territorially planned development of Lviv was expanded and supplemented. The examples of the application of European modern architecturally urban ideas in large cities of Galicia were identified. The results of this work can be used during the complex reconstruction of cities taking into account their classification by town-building typology of the historically architectural heritage aiming at identifying the preserved historic town-planning complexes and elements of planned structure for their further protection.
