Essay

For the first time the thesis investigates the translation as a scientific problem in the context of study of Ukrainian literature within XIX - beginning of XX centuries. The work notes significant meaning of translator's thought at all stages of national literature evolution (in the making, within the period of formation, consolidation, interliterary development), it accentuates that great translator's material not only reflected main stages of literary development, but also contributed to its further worldwide development. Investigation of translator's thought evolution, which covers wide range of translation problems studying, witnesses of general-literary character of artistic translation as a literary sample, mean for literary taste formation, development of literary language, source of conceptually thematic, genre-stylistic enrichment of Ukrainian literature, its renewal, including modernization, a stimulus of original art (R.Gonorsky, P.Gulak-Artemovsky, L.Borovykovsky, E.Grebinka, M.Kostomarov,P.Kulish, M.Dragomanov, I.Franko, Lesya Ukrainka). Translation as a general-literary problem is determined in the thesis with, significant factor of formation of national literature concept, destined at development of its traditions and their enrichment with universal achievements. Investigation of translation as a scientific problem in Ukrainian literary criticism within XIX beginning of XX centuries confirms the effectiveness of translator's thought in development of literature study, owning to which understanding of tasks of national literary development in general and individual art in particular became more profound. It allows interpreting it as an integral part of study of literature that, in its turn, contributes to a wider mastering of national literature and study of it.
