Vynogradova O. The conception of Hetman Mazepa character in Ukrainian historical novels.

The dissertation is devoted to the study of conception of Hetman Mazepa character in Ukrainian historical novels at the end of XIX and during XX centuries. The novels by D.Mordovets "Czar and Hetman" (1880), M.Starytsky "The Mazepa Youth" (1893) and "The Ruin" (1899), B.Lepkiy "Mazepa" (1926-1929), L.Poltava "1709" (1961), R.Ivanychuk "Orda" (1992), B.Sushynsky "Hetman Mazepa: Return to Baturyn" (2001) are taken for the deepest analisis. It was determined the dependence of interpretation of Hetman Mazepa's name and his acts from the outlook of these autors, from historical documents and objective life circumstances. It was a determined fact that majority of masters of Ukrainian historical prose gave a positive conception of Hetman Mazepa's character in their works and convicted empire anathema.
