Essay

Based on the analysis of literature and video and audio recordings the manuscript analyses opera-director's work of the National Artist of Ukraine, professor Iryna Molostova. Analyzed here for the first time is the genesis of Ukrainian opera directing. Manuscript scrutinizes development of I.Molostova as an opera director within the developmental framework of the Ukrainian Opera Theatre. Ukrainian opera and directing in it are analysed in the context of professional growth of I. Molostova as director. Close attention is given to work of Molostova to closely integrate parts of stage performance and create more expressive stage language. Thesis concludes that the indisputable peak in the professional growth of I. Molostova was her staging of D. Shostakovich’ opera "Katerina Izmailova" at the T. Shevchenko Kiev Opera House. Thesis also deals with the work principles of I. Molostova in the capacity of opera-director. Opera directing principles of Molostova are analysed here for the first time. Among them: elevated expression of stage developments; deep psychological analysis of the roles; dynamic music and stage apprehension of the roles; compilation of parts into a whole thing, and also methods of work with singers in creating roles adequate to the author’s intention.
