Essay

Topicality of the dissertation is determined with the fact that in Ukrainian philology the problem of formation of imperative meanings in the Ukrainian language of the 16-18 centuries is still studied insufficiently and requires a special investigation especially as regards the history of language. Purpose – complex research of formal-grammatical and functional-semantic characteristics of imperative constructions. Object – imperative constructions in multi-styled works of different genres of the Ukrainian written language from the 16-18 centuries. Subject – formal-grammatical and functional-semantic characteristics of imperative units detected in the researched texts of the above period. The deductive-inductive method is applied with its techniques, i.e. full and partial purposeful research of the material, linguistic observation and comprehension of its results, methods of transformational, distributional and statistical analysis. Novelty – the study is the first attempt of complex investigation of imperative meanings in the Ukrainian language of the 16-18 centuries with the regard for a specific character of coming into being, development and functioning of the category system of the grammatical units analyzed. The results of the research can be used in the higher school linguistic didactics in particular when teaching the special disciplines of the modern Ukrainian literary language (the topics “Verb”, “Sentence kinds according to utterance purpose”), historical grammar of the Ukrainian language, special courses, special seminars and elective courses as well as in lexicography.
