Essay

P & I Club is examined as non-profit association which has been created for insurance of its member's risks. Every member guarantees a complete settlement of obligations as stated in Club's contract by paying the fixed or variable calls (contribution calls). The contribution calls are subdivided into 3 categories: - advance calls; - supplementary or additional calls; - catastrophe calls. P & I Clubs are not widespread in Ukraine at the moment because the proper normatively-legal base is not created for this purpose yet. The characteristic features of insurance in P & I Clubs are also determined clearly. It is suggested for satisfaction of interests of assured-shipowners to develop a normatively-legal base in order to create P & I Clubs in Ukraine that will function properly. The risks which can be the object of P & I Insurance have been also determined for the first time. The risks that are covered by P & I Clubs can be divided into three large groups: 1) liability to persons (seamen and other than seamen).2) collision with other ships; 3) cargo liabilities"
