Essay

The dissertation considers the institute of peace courts, created according to the court reform of 1864, investigates its structural and functional features. It analyses the main stages of development of this institute in the course of preparation of court reform. With utilization of great number of archival and statistic material it is found out the specificity of organization and activities of peace courts in provinces of Left-bank Ukraine, it is discovered the peculiarities of their functioning in these regions. It is also given the thorough illustration for such questions as legal status of district and honorary peace judges, the peculiarities of organization and activities of peace judges congresses as the second instance for peace courts, the specificity of autonomous status of peace courts in total judicial system of the state. On the basis of generalized statistic tables about the activities of peace courts in Ukrainian provinces, official reports and conclusions of supreme officials it is concluded that the foundation of peace courts in the middle of 19th century had the grand positive meaning for formation of democratic and socially determined justice.
