Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the research of folk stone grave crosses of Ukrainian Carpathians in the middle of XVIII - first half of the XX th century. Based on the first put into practice powerful complex of monuments and the analysis of literature sources the peculiarities of this kind of folk art in the region are submitted in thе thesis. The highly developed art of cross-making, the culture of cross found their reflection in the Carpathians, where this symbol has gradually established among the population of the region since the times of Christianity introduction. The analysis of the empiric material proves that stone was widely used for making landscape particularly grave crosses. The peculiarities of the development and the history of memorialplastics and typologisation of artifacts are also considered, and their art characteristics are analyzed. In the process of research it is stated that the formation of folk grave stone crosses of Ukrainian Carpathians performed under the influence of local memorial-making, folk art and partly small sacral architecture of neighboring nations
