Essay

The dissertation is the first in Ukrainian and foreign literary studies systematic research of the dramaturgy of English playwright Harold Pinter. The plays of different stages of his creative work are analyzed from the viewpoint of genre differentiation. The main attention is paid to the substantiation of the genre terms and revealing those conditions that caused different genre models. The dissertation is devoted to the functioning specifics of different stylistic and genre features in Pinter's plays. Four conflict types were found. The first one is referred to the paradigm of the drama of the absurd: a person faces powerful irrational forces that threaten to ruin his life. These forces are embodied in the figures of mysterious "strangers" that provoke self-destroying impulses in personages-victims. The second type of conflict is that of the domestic drama. Unlike the drama of the absurd, characters and actions of personages of Pinter's domestic drama are psychologically motivated. Their relationships include psychological games. The conflict of Pinter political theatre is based on the antithesis "an Individual/the State". These plays are close to the principles of the theater of cruelty. The fourth type conflict is that of dramatic parables. Its central problem is tragic loss of links between people, their incapability to communicate. The characters of his parables are not suffering from unreasonable fears, so there is no need to create the figures of mysterious aggressors to threaten them. According to the conflict type stylistic peculiarities of dramatic dialogue were analyzed.
