Essay

The object is the confixal derivational subsystem of noun in the Ukrainian language. The aim is to describe the formation of the confixal derivational subsystem of noun in the Ukrainian language of the XI-XVIII centuries. The methods used in the research are the descriptive, the comparative-historical, the comparative and the statistical methods. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that this is the first comprehensive research into the confixal derivational subsystem of noun in the Ukrainian linguistics. It scrutinizes the formation of every confixal derivational type, reveals the main patterns of confixal derivatives, and describes the confixal formation of derivatives of different lexical-derivational groups. The theoretical significance of the thesis is that the facts and the conclusions can be the basis for a generalizing work on confixal derivation of noun and for the further historical-derivational research in this field. The practical significance of the thesis is that the results of the research can be used in the higher institutes of education for the profound study of morphology, historical grammar and the history of the Ukrainian literary language; for working out special courses in theoretical and historical derivation studies, morphonology, and onomastics. The field is philology
