The dissertation focuses on the problem of forming future teachers’ socio-cultural competence while reading English mass media texts (newspaper and magazine articles). The methodology has been theoretically substantiated. The sociopsychological, linguistic and didactic premises of forming socio-cultural competence were taken into consideration. The term “socio-cultural competence while reading mass media texts” has been defined. The structure and content of this competence were determined. Five stages of forming the socio-cultural knowledge, habits and skills were offered. Criteria for selecting authentic English newspaper and magazine articles were specified. As a result of the research, a system of exercises to form socio-cultural competence while reading mass media texts has been worked out and theoretically substantiated. The effectiveness of the suggested methodology was verified and confirmed during two series of experimental teaching. Methodological recommendations concerning forming future teachers’ socio-cultural competence while reading English newspaper and magazine articles have been developed and applied in practice in three higher educational establishments in Ukraine.
