Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the systemic and complex analysis of the semantic-syntactical structure of simple sentences with the predicate set verb-noun phrases. In the paper an attempt was made to qualify the linguistic status of the set verb-noun phrases; their semantic structure, valency and synonymy were investigated. Occupying the niche between free word combinations and phraseological units, they are regarded as lexical-grammatical analytical units of language serving as functional equivalents of verbs. Showing the best correlation with the analytism development in the Indo-European languages, the complex nominative units under research enable the expression of processual semantics in the sphere of abstract phenomena. The integrity of the conveyed nominative meaning is achieved as a result of the organic (complementary) junction of the complex verb's constituents followed by the redistribution of the functional-notional load between them. Suffering from the partial loss of the primary meaning (notional eroding) the verbal component functions as the grammatical centre of the set verb-noun phrase. The latter acquires the nominative significance and lexical concreteness at the expense of its nominal component, which forms its semantic core. The conducted research failed to verify the doublet character of the phrases under consideration as compared with the single-word names of verbal features. The partitioned nature of the set verb-noun phrases facilitates the complication of their general meaning with some additional semantic-grammatical and expressive-stylistic nuances. Moreover, some analytical verbal units are the only possible means of the extra-lingual phenomena naming. The set verb-noun phrases' specificity reveals itself in their combinability as well. The analytical character of their structure causes the modification of their semantically supreme nominal constituents with the attributive components aiming at the specification and specialization of the denoted predicative feature as well as theexplication of its qualitative evaluation.
