Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the characterization of the models "artist as a prophet" and "artist as a maker" as means for researching the dynamics of self-determination of an artist in Russian and Ukrainian socio-cultural space in the first third of XX cent. There is an analysis of the connection of the status of the model "artist as a prophet" with the increasing role of intellectuals and domination of the idea of an artist as an initiator of socio-cultural changes at the beginning of this period. Monopolisation of power and ideology was connected with use of the definition "fellow-traveller", which reflected the increasing role of the model "artist as a maker" in the process of self-determination of an artist. The dynamics of interaction of these two models also lie in development of main aesmetical ideas of the art trends of the examined period, as well as they become apparent in individual self-determination of artists, which reflects the specific character of their artistic personal-ity. The socio-cultural sense of the discussion about the "social order" in the context of changes of the status of an artist in society, literary and artistic life in the twenties and the thirties was elucidated. Since the pressure of political power threatened an artist with limitations in the area of form and content, this assisted in the increase of the role of the model "artist as a prophet" as the only possibility of preserving his creative individuality, even in spite of danger to his life.
