Essay

The thesis presents a concept of the regional development of musical culture in Poltava Oblast (XIX – early XX century) as a particular historical and cultural phenomenon. This research is focused on major areas of institutional establishment of musical culture in the region, which were developing against the background of dynamic processes of social and cultural development of Poltava Oblast in the period of Ukrainian national renaissance. Main criteria of musical culture of the region, as a manifestation of individuality and uniqueness of the region’s historical and cultural development, have been researched in three major areas of musical culture: musical rendition, musical education and concert and tour life. Having studied a large number of historical and cultural documentary sources and archive material, the author substantiates the idea that the region had been one of the principal regions of Ukraine not only due to its central geographical location; it stood out as a home of significant cultural and artistic accomplishments of both regional and, first and foremost, national importance.
