Essay

The dissertation deals with the social categories of modus understood as a detailed complex of subjective meanings expressed by the addresser in the communication process versus the content of utterance and addressee. The utterance has been studied in terms the context, situation and background knowledge of the participants in communication (presuppositions). It constitutes a natural environment in which the onomaceological as well as the nomination functions of the language are performed due to the referent of utterance being the extra linguistic reality by itself. For the fist time the contents, structure and semantics of the social category of modus have been defined at the backdrop of the epistolary texts of the 19-20th century Ukrainian writers. The major factor of speech communication has been assumed to be a sender of the message - the addresser as well as a receiver of the message - the addressee. Socially relevant markers of the participants in communication, the addressee factor and communication situation result in the choice of the means of expression of the relation addresser-addressee as well as "the third persons" uninvolved in the written communication.
