Essay

The present thesis is devoted to the complex analysis of pronunciation of teachers in Germany (native speakers of German) at the segment level. The investigation is based on the statement about the interaction of social and situational factors which causes and determines a complex of phonetic peculiarities. These correlate with the sociolectal ones (which characterize the speech of a social group) and with the phonostylistic ones (which are bound up with certain situation and style). Phonetic variants were registered in formal and informal situations of communication that also differed in the degree of the speakers' attention to their own speech. The correlation analysis allowed to define variable rules of vowel and consonant realization in the informants' speech taking into account the position in a word and the communicative situation. These rules (their numerical value) indicate how frequently the phonological variables and their variants are being realized. This frequency characterizes the teachers' speech in the typical communicative situations, and the above mentioned rules are considered to be the differential features of the teachers' speech. The investigation was carried out using the modern sociophonetic research methods.
