Essay

The thesis focuses on the contrastive analysis of the verbs of location in the English, German and Ukrainian languages. The semantics of verbs denoting the situation of location incorporates a number of actions the subject of which aims at changing the position of the object or the subject itself. The semantic analysis of verbs of location in English, German and Ukrainian has shown that their word-formation peculiarities and distribution greatly affect the semantic structure of the verbs under study. The componential analysis has made it possible to distinguish common and differential semes within the semantic structure of the verbs in the languages compared. The differential semantic components has permitted classifying the verbs of location into corresponding lexico-semantic paradigms. On the basis of the distributional analysis of the verbs of location within the English, German and Ukrainian belles-lettres texts common and differential ways of representing locative semantics of syntagmatic level have been traced.
