Essay

The work concentrates on the System of Expression of French pedagogue, vocalist and composer Francois Delsarte (1811-1871) and its influence on world performing arts. The genesis of Delsarte's original Course of Applied Esthetics is the subject of the work, as well as, the analysis of structure and content of his philosophy and the comparison with other creative methods of European and Asian theatre. The evolution of Delsarte's method, its transformation into "System of Expression" in USA has been studied, as seen through works of American pupils and followers, such as James Steele Mackaye, Genevieve Stebbins etc. In the focus of the work there is the influence of Delsartism on twentieth-century theatre and dance of USA and Europe, and especially on Russian theatre ("Delsarte-Volkonsky System"). In the question of influence of Delsarte's System on Ukrainian performing arts, there has been analyzed the facts of using the System as an actor's training in "Molodiy Teatr" ("Young Theatre") of the reformerof Ukrainian theatre Les Kurbas, as well as, the teaching of Delsarte's theory at Kyiv Lysenko Music-drama Institute in 1920th.
