Kochubey V. Peculiarities of foreign accent in the English speech of Ukrainians: phonemic and phonetic aspects

The dissertation focuses on the comprehensive study of segmental peculiarities of foreign accent in the English speech of Ukrainians. The foreign accent is proved to be actualized in the English speech of Ukrainians due to its system-forming linguistic and extralinguistic factors in bilingual situation. It is revealed through its system-forming features which from the perspective of segmental phonetics embrace violations of the English articulatory basis, deviations from the standard pronunciation of the English phonemes and allophones. The suggested method of the comprehensive study of foreign accent enables to build a model of the predicted foreign accent in the Ukrainian realization of English sound segments and to discover the salient features of real accent in the English speech of Ukrainians. This thesis defines a set of accent markers by which native speakers may recognize the Ukrainian accent in English.
