Essay

The topicality of the dissertation is based on the fact that the names of the populated sites anol object has been done fragmentaryly and as a result they olont have integral scientific approach. The aim of the investigation is the complex analysis of derivational motivational and lexico-semantic peculiariti es of the oikonymic system of Cherkasy region fom the ancient time up to the modern period. The object of the investigation is the names of the populated sites and object of 20 regions in Cherkasy which were registed in the acts, chronicles, lists, reference books maps. The subject of the investigation is the derivational structure of one-, two-, and multicomponent names of populatid sites of Cherkasy region, theiv lexico-semantic and motivational peculiarities. Descriptional method with genetic, etymolodical, word-forming, formating, statistical, comparative, lingvogeographical and cartographic devices ave used. The novelty of the investigation. The names of the populated sites and objech became the object of the monographic investigation for the first time. The paper describes the historic aspect of colonisation and chahges in administrative and territorial devision of Cherkasy. It made derivational motivational and lexico-semantic classification of the names of the populated sites and objecti which function in the modern period and alro it present the classification of the names of the denotates which were used in the account and werecombined with other settlements. It distinguished common and distinctive fealeres of native oikonymicon in the comparison with Ukrainian regions which have been already investigated. It was done the vocabulary of the names of settlement in Cherkasy region which indudes 1 832 positions. The result of the investigation can be used in special course "Ukrainian onomastica"; to create regional and Ukrainian dictionaries of the names of the populated sites and object, "Historic etymological dictionary of the names of Ukrainian towns and villages"; "Ukrainian onomastic allas".
