Kushnaryova T. Test control of skill possession of the future veterinaries to read English texts on specialty

The thesis is devoted to the problem of assessment students’ skills to read professional texts in English at the veterinary department of the higher educational institution. The testing system is considered as an individual system integrated into the whole system of education. The testing system is based on its key elements, namely test a/ aim (to measure level of language proficiency in reading professional literature in English), b/ targets (reading skills and strategies), c/ purposes (assessment and monitoring), forms (‘pencil and paper’, bilingual, computer based), means (language material, test tasks) and stages (a lesson, a unit, a module, the end of the first year of study). Professional texts have been analyzed regarding their stylistic and genre peculiarities. It has been concluded that for the test development purposes authentic texts on veterinary issues should be selected from the original professional sources of information and adapted as a test task. It has been theoretically and experimentally proved that the final testing can be provided with locally standardized test tasks.
