Essay

It is for the first time for the Ukrainian linguistics, that the dissertation describes communicative manifestations of the illocutive verbs, establishes links between predicate semantics and illocutive utterance structuring, and describes in detail semantic-syntactic structure of the utterance from the standpoint of speech act theory. The dissertation provides complex analysis of the semantic-syntactic structure of the sentences with illocutive predicates (on the basis of the Ukrainian literature works of the late 1800s-early 2000s, spoken language, and mass-media). Semantic and functional features of the Modern Ukrainian illocutive verbs are examined from the standpoint of the speech act theory; a new approach to the illocutive modality category and to the illocutive function in the linguistic context is suggested. The links between semantic and functional manifestations and the grammatical categories of tense, modality, aspect and transitivity are found out. The main types of the illocutive predicates are singled out. The position model of the sentence in connection with semantic-stylistic valency of the illocutive predicate is defined; the positions of subject, object and predicate in illocutive sentences are described; the main forms of the illocutive sentence complication through causation and authorization are found out; the main types of formal semantic correlation between illocutive sentences and other syntactic structures are described thus confirming non-elementary nature of their semantics.
