Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of the basic factors in the formation of Ukraine's foreign policy strategy from the period when the country gained its independence and up to the presidential elections of 2004. The study examines the distinctive features of the geopolitical location of Ukraine and analyzes its national interests as well as main priorities of its foreign policy doctrine. Drawing extensively on a broad range of sources, scientific literature and his personal experience in foreign policy, the author analyzes the main geostrategic concepts of the further development of foreign policy and substantiates the priority of Ukraine's course toward European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Status of independent Ukraine is determined as "medium-range" European country, with a strong potential to be influenced in common European security system and development in the post-soviet area.
