The thesis deals with the problem of forming socio-cultural competence of basic general secondary schoolchildren while teaching interactional speech in English. The term “socio-cultural competence”, its structure and content have been determined. Two stages of forming this competence have been offered. The criteria for selecting authentic English texts have been specified. A special system of exercises to form socio-cultural competence while teaching interactional speech has been worked out and theoretically substantiated. The effectiveness of the suggested system of exercises has been verified and confirmed during three series of experimental teaching. Methodological recommendations concerning forming socio-cultural competence of basic general secondary schoolchildren while teaching interactional speech in English have been developed and applied in practice in five secondary schools of Ukraine.
