Essay

This dissertation studies the style classification of the novel "Quid est Veritas?" ("What is truth?") by Natalena Koroleva. This work proves that "Quid est Veritas?" being written in manner of legend possesses the features of the historical novel comprising of canonical and non-canonical texts (apocrypha, hagiography) of early Christianity and romantic tradition of the modern literature. It is the first attempt to determine the uniqueness of literary style of writer, the author's interpretation of the mystical events connected with the mystery of Rabbi the Galilean. In the thesis it is also demonstrated the motives of justification of the deeds by Ponti Pilate, Mary the Magdalena and other characters which personalities were analyzed in the extreme situation of the decadence of the Roman Empire and origination of the new faith. Setting down stylistic conformity of the novel-legend "Quid est Veritas?" helps to clarify the conception of genology and shows the significance of N. Koroleva in evolution ofUkrainian historical novel.
