Essay

Thesis deals with research of language archaisation process in Greek historical prose of the II III c., reflecting predominant archaisation trends in culture, literature and language of Hellenic-Roman Period. This thesis provides a comprehensive as well as quantitative analysis of phonetic, morphologic, syntactic, and lexical archaisms, obtained in the Arrian's VAlexa, ndrou avna, basij. It was established, that the aftermath for a number of active factors in Hellenic-Roman Period (i.e. Atticism; traditions of genre language in Greek historiography; linguistic studies; historic, political and cultural prerequisites; educational system, etc.) was a deliberate artificial archaisation of Greek historiography language on all language levels. Archaisation trends were manifested by writers adhering to the norms of Ionic and classical Attic dialects. In Arrian's language lexical and morphologic were proven to be the most archaistic levels in terms of application of classic Attic elements, while phonetic level was notably influenced by Ionic dialect. Despite atticizing mimesis, the author, however, failed to completely escape the influence of his contemporary language trends, determinative for Koine development, hence allowing innovative elements in his language. With manifestations at every language level, hyperdialecticism bears graphic evidence of author's excessive desire to artificially bring the language of his work close to classical Attic norm.
