Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the intensity of the attributive feature in Latin, namely in the poetry of Horace, Vіrgil and Ovid. In the proposed study, the intensification of the attribute (adjective, participle) is considered only within the limits of absolute (nonrelativic, non-equilibrium) intensity. In the presented workhas been carried out the systematization and inventory of means of expression of the attributive feature, syntactic models and defined lexical-semantic features. The theoretical principles of the concept of «category of intensity» are covered, a number of definitions of the term «intensity» are considered, and the relationship of the intensity category with the categories of quality, quantity, and measure is shown. Differentiating the concept of «intensity» and «gradation» is considered the nature and the structure of gradation-scalar scale of intensity degree, as well as the concept of the intensity level is illuminated and the system of intensity degrees in the Latin language is described. The theoretical basis for each of the six means of expressing the intensity of the attributive sign (means-intensities) is provided. These means are divided into morphological and lexical-syntactic. The morphological means include: a) suffix intensifiers -or, -ius, -issim, -lim, -rim (absolute (non-relative) comparative and superlative); b) deminutitive (diminutive-caring) suffix-intensifiers -ulu (-olu), -culu, -ellu, -illu; c) prefixing intensifiers prae-, per-. The lexical-syntactic means include: a) analytical construct adverb (intensifier) + adjective; b) adjective with elative meaning; c) amplifying analytic construct quam + adjective; reinforcing structure with quamvis connector in subordinate admissibility sentences. Considering the relationship between the category of the intensity of the attributive feature and the category of evaluation, emotionality, expressiveness in the functional plan, we divide it into the following subtypes: 1. Objective intensity; 2. Subjective-estimated intensity; 3. Subjective-emotional-estimated intensity. Here we present the theoretical material of objective and subjective intensity. Taking into account that all means-intensities express the elastic degree of intensity, the category of elativity is separately considered. The subject of consideration of this category is an elative. The category of elativity closely intersects with the category of intensity and represents those means in a language that expresses a large (elative) degree. Its adjectives are of extreme-integer value, that is, those that express the elative in the boundary function. In the dissertation research are described the structural-syntactic models (simple bilingual and complex multicompounds) in detail, and the lexical-semantic features of each of the six means-intensities, as well as extreme-elated adjectives. Classifying the intensities of means-intensities by the corresponding lexical-semantic groups, it is discovered that it is inherent in them to intensify the following concepts: physical and abstract values, quantity, weight, volume, spatial values (also temporal-spatial); human traits of character, vices and virtues, behavior, emotional and emotional state, talents, beauty; qualitative properties of objects, objects, in particular objects of nature. The principles of realization of objectively evaluative, subjective-evaluative and subjective-emotional-estimation intensity in the text are researched; their functional features are revealed.
