Essay

The dissertation is concerned with the analysis of the lexical and semantic field of tactile adjectives carried out on the basis of the study of the Latin poetry of Augustan age writers as an important component of the linguistic and poetic pictures of the world of ancient Romans. Words denoting touch perception, as their significant part, play an exclusive role in the process of primary world awareness, therefore its objectivation language is natural, which for this purpose uses a wide range of expressive means, with adjectives occupying an important place. The dissertation deals with questions of linguistic and poetic pictures of the world. The position of the adjective is defined among other parts of speech, with attention being paid to the semantic (syncretic and synesthetic) and grammatical features of adjectives. The systemic connections and the main stylistic functions of the adjective were studied too and methods of research of tactile adjectives on the basis of the poetic Latin language were examined. In the lexical and semantic field of touch, 8 microfields, which consist of 22 lexical and semantic groups, were singled out and their quantitative content was determined. Three microfields of adjectives denoting heat, texture and durability were analysed in detail. In addition, it was revealed that the quantitative and qualitative composition of microfields of tactile adjectives is non-homogenous. The core part of the lexical and semantic field of touch is formed by adjectives with an initial tactile meaning and with a high frequency of use in texts. Adjectives with non-tactile initial semantics with a low frequency of use were referred to the periphery.
