Essay

The contextual distribution of the adjectives of taste in the texts by Plautus, Horace, and Petronius proves their synaesthetic links with the adjectives of other sensory groups and with those of the non-sensory signification to be responsible for the new members' affiliation and the expansion of the lexical-semantic group in question. The structure of the lexical-semantic group studied can be shown as two sets of contextual synonyms juxtaposed on the basis of the criterion of a positive vs. negative characteristic of taste revealing certain quantitative fluctuation over time. Synaesthesia also brought about a change in hierarchical structure of the group from two- to tree-tier stratification.
