Essay

The thesis focuses on the contrastive analysis of metonyms, i.e. nouns whose meaning results from the metonymic transference based on the logical association of contiguity, and that are used to denote a human being in Modern English and Ukrainian languages. The semantic classification of metonymic transfers denoting a human being suggested in the research comprises causal, attributive, local, temporal, synecdochical and some mixed types which, in their turn, have been stratified into 11 semantic models and 27 thematic groups. A certain interdependence of semantics and productivity of metonyms and frequency of occurrence in the languages of comparison has been established. Common and distinctive features in the semantics of the units under consideration have been distinguished, paradigmatic and syntagmatic quantitative characteristics of certain types have been highlighted. There is a certain correlation between the semantics of the units under analysis and their syntactic functions in the sentence.
