Essay

This presents the results of the research into the role of Ancient Greek adjectival synonyms with the meaning "unhappy" as a tool for rendering the tragic in the texts of ancient Greek tragedies. The analysis of etymological, morphological and semantic structure of each of the members of the synonymous row was carried out alongside with the observation of their functioning, distribution, combinability and frequency of occurrence. The author has built a comprehensive model of the synonymous row of the adjectives with the meaning "unhappy" (53 lexemes). It includes the nucleus (the dominant synonym and a set of lexemes with a fairly low defectiveness of the semanteme), and the periphery presented by lexemes with a varied scope of the said defectiveness of the semanteme: low (2-3 sememes), high (5-7 sememes) and maximal (8 sememes). The semantic distances between the dominant and other constituents of the respective row have been established.
