Essay

The dissertation offers a general reconstruction of an ethnic history of the population of the Lower Dnepr basin before the Mongolian expansion and during the Golden Horde. The research is based on the complex study of the anthropological material from Medieval sites Mamay Surka, Blagoveshchenka, Kamenka, and Kairy. The inter-group analysis has shown the mixed anthropological structure and presence of different morphological types in these steppe groups. The comparative analysis of these series with the numerous East European groups has shown that the formation of the settled population of the Lower Dnepr occurred on a basis of Alan, Slavic, Bulgarian, Sarmatian and Nomadic components. Migrations of the settled and nomadic population both before the Mongolian expansion and during Golden Horde are traced from the different territories - Middle Dnepr basin, Crimea, the Don region, the Volga region and Northern Caucasus. Comparison of Mamay Surka, Blagoveshchenka, Kamenka, Kairy (Southern Ukraine) and Torgovitsa (Central Ukraine) craniological series with the series of Ukrainians (17 - first half of 19 centuries) from southern, eastern, central and western territories testify to significant morphological affinity between them. Participation of the settled population of the 12-th - the beginning of 15-th centuries from Southern and Central Ukraine in the formation of anthropological structure of Ukrainians is marked.
