Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of opera play phenomenon based on two famous opera plays of the 20th century: «Madama Butterfly» by Giacomo Puccini and «Katerina Ismailova» by Dmitri Shostakovich, which includes not only the author’s but the performer’s texts. Contemporary nature of this subject is determined be the need in fundamental progress in sphere of modern Ukrainian historical musicology. Semeiotic approach allowed the author to analyze opera play, focusing her attention on the process of formation of sense when the author’s vision was realized in the opera score and scenic interpretations. At the same time, the author took into account perception of the work and the play by spectators and critics alike, during which new semantic parameters of the opera as a semeiotic object are opened. Semeiotic method was applied when determining functions of each of the opera play components: play characters, and also the environment of their functioning and material world reproduced in decorationsand the requisite. This method allowed to deepen the understanding of opera as a text which includes scenic personification, and determine typological indications of structural components and at the same time their individual uniqueness. The dissertation analyzes the opera play from the point of view of variability of sign function in author’s, performer’s and theatrical scenic texts. It enabled the author to trace the process of producing new information born during gradual development of different elements.
