Essay

The systematical description of the preaching as a separate substyle of the religious style of the modern Ukrainian language has been offered on the basis of the experience of the Ukrainian linguistics and homiletics. The preaching substyle, keeping the principle features of the religious style (solemnity, loftiness, figurativeness, symbolism, conservatism) is characterised by a number of peculiarities using the means of language. The analysis of Yosyph Slipiy's preaching works gives the opportunity to define the following language features of the preaching: Church Slavonic words, the colloquial elements, the speech clich? (the liturgical acclamations), the biblical quotations, the reference to the canonical sources, the limited using of the religious terminology, the particular phrase's rhythm and melody which is achieved by inversion, the paraphrasticness, the rhetorical expressions, figurativeness, the usage of the elements of the artistical speech (epithet, comparison, metaphor). The preachings arecharacterized by their own distinctive features as the report of information, the simplification of reasons, argumentation, the source of which is the Bible as the authentic basis of the preachings with the aim to a activate the parishioners' thinking. The particularity and the stylistic potential of the religious vocabulary have been defined on the basis of the factual material analysis (the card-index contains up to 6800 files). The peculiarities of the poetic syntax of Yosyph Slipiy's preaching works have been analyzed.It has been fixed that Yosyph Slipiy's preachings are intended for the intellectual, experienced receptors because they include not only the theological information but give the information in sociology, world history, the history of church etc. These facts explain a number of numerous particular terms including religious ones in the analyzed texts.
