Essay

In this dissertation, one of the masterpieces of Russian classical literature is examined from the point of view of the authorial poetic being and the ways in which the authorial conflict originates, develops, and ultimately resolves itself. Dissertation argues against a common view on the novel which foregrounds the novel's social and ideological conflict. Dissertation considers this conflict as derivative, transformational in relation to the poetic conflict of the authorial being. The tragic destiny of the novel's protagonist is interpreted as an effect of the resolution of the conflict of love. "Love" is understood in its ontological sense, specifically, as a fundamental value. The definitive parameters of this value Russian literature has been striving to establish during the entire course of its existence
