Essay

The dissertation is concerned with research of gender representation of the philosophy of love in the prose by symbolists on the basis of metatexts by such creative couples as D. Merezhkovsky – Z. Gippius and V. Brjusov – N. Petrovskaya. For this purpose, we have implemented our own strategy of comparative gender analasis of the prose by the aforementioned authors which lies in combining the methods of classical literarure studies with new directions, including women's studies and the “new historicism”. We have made amendments and additions to the history of formation of gender science and highlighted the main trends in modern research of gender. We have also structurized the development stages of the theory of women’s research of literature in the 20th century and characterized the main achievements of Russian literature of the 19th-early 20th century in gender creativity issues. It is determined that the alternative approach to the nature of love is demonstrated by authors of Moscow society of symbolists, such as V. Bryusov and N. Petrovskaya. A conclusion is made that representatives of these two extraordinary couples have a common view of the role of love on the life-creative method of symbolism and declare polar concepts of the philosophy of love in their literary and non-fiction prose.
