Essay

The present study was focused on elucidating the molecular details of lysozyme interactions with model lipid membranes of different composition. Lysozyme-lipid complexation has been quantified in terms of continuum models of electrostatically-driven adsorption. Evidence for the formation of lysozyme aggregates upon increasing membrane surface potential has been obtained. Formation of lysozyme-lipid complexes was found to be accompanied by the restrictions of protein intramolecular mobility. Protein effect on physicochemical properties of lipid bilayer was shown to involve the reduction of membrane free volume, restrictions of lipid lateral mobility, bilayer dehydration, lipid demixing. Lysozyme location relative to lipid-water interface has been characterized. The conceptual model of lysozyme-lipid interactions has been proposed.
