Kyryliuk O. Cynonymy in Modern Ukrainian: Principles of Nomination and Ways of Derivation

The research focuses on the study of dogs' names in the Ukrainian language. The survey of 4387 names of dogs with their variants and 150 names of plants / breeding grounds is performed. According to the motivational signs, which are based on nomination, the main principles of animals' nomination are defined. The volume of onymic and appellative vocabulary, that serves as the source basis for dogs' names formation is determined. It is investigated the ways of word-building, which are characteristic for cynonyms, the productive formants and word-building types are considered. This thesis studies the place of cynonym in the modern zoonymic system, reveals the peculiarities of its major and additional functions. It is defined the main linguistic and extralinguistic factors of influence concerning the choice of dogs' name, especially it is elucidated the manner of fashion influence, traditions and owner's personal likings on the changes in the sphere of cynonymy. It is also defined the peculiarity of innercontent of dogs' names. The names of plants / breeding grounds are separately investigated in the thesis. These names are also analyzed according to the principles and motives of nomination, ways of word-building.
