Solodova O. Linguistic and Cognitive Characteristics of the Composition of the Text of J.K. Rowling’s English Tales

The object of the research is the composition of the text of J.K. Rowling’s tales that refer to postmodernism. The aim of the research is linguistic and cognitive description of the composition of the text of J.K. Rowling’s postmodernistic tales. Complex method of analysis is proposed in the dissertation. Thus, to reveal plot blocks of compositional meaning structure and compositional devices contextual and situational analysis as well as interpretational and textual analysis are used. The reconstruction of the key conceptual metaphor, which in the text unfolds into a number of conceptual metaphors and metonymies, is performed via semantic and conceptual analysis. To describe linguistic and stylistic means of actualization of plot and meaning composition the stylistic analysis is used. The scientific novelty of the research is in the fact that for the first time the composition of the text of J.K. Rowling’s English tales is studied within the framework of cognitive poetics. The latter gives the possibility to describe genre peculiarity of texts in the terms of linguistics. The novelty also lies in the viewing of the composition as interaction of plot and meaning structures of the text and their verbal representation. For the first time the compositional models of the text of J.K. Rowling’s tales are revealed. The theoretical significance of the dissertation is in the further development of the theory of composition of the text through the study of its compositional plot structure, compositional meaning structure, linguistic and stylistic means of their actualization in the text of modern English author’s tales. Certain contribution to the theory of composition is the revealing and description of the compositional devices which perform text building and text forming functions. The revealing of a number of conceptual metaphors and metonymies and explanation of their peculiarity is a contribution to the theory of metaphor. The practical value of the research is in the possibility to use theoretical theses and conclusions of the dissertation in the course of English language stylistics (section “The Interpretation of Fiction Texts”), English language lexicology (section “Neology”), theory of nomination, cognitive linguistics courses, in scientific researches.
