Essay

This dissertation focuses on the categories of aspectuality and temporality in the Italian and Ukrainian languages. A comparative analysis of the past tenses of the perfect / imperfect aspects in Italian and perfective / imperfective in Ukrainian has been accomplished in the light of recent achievements in frame and prototype semantics. Specific features of the universal categories of aspectuality and temporality have been established, their components have been singled out. A contrastive typological study of these categories in Italian and Ukrainian has been carried out with regard to semantic classes of verbs. That has allowed to elucidate the factors which predetermine similarities and differences in the structure and functions of the categories of aspectuality and temporality in the contrasted languages.
