Essay

This dissertation presents novel investigation of the functional-semantic category of concessiveness in Ukrainian. Specifically, it examines a means of marking concessive semantic-syntactic relationships in a complex sentence (with subordinate and coordinated clauses) and in a simple sentence with complex elements. The structure of the functional-semantic category of concessiveness is defined as such that consists of a nucleus and other components associated with pre-nucleus, periphery and out-periphery. The hierarchy of concessive semantics is defined according to the type of conjunctions or connective means used in complex and simple sentences which express concessiveness of an event. Complex sentences with subordinate relationships between clauses are classified as concessive-limitational, concessive-oppositional, universally-concessive, concessive-conditional and conditionally-concessive. Complex sentences with coordinated relationships between clauses are split on two groups: oppositionally-concessive and disjunctive-concessive. Complex sentences without conjunctions are considered to be derived from complex sentences with the same semantic relationships. Simple sentences with complex elements are also analyzed as derivates from corresponding complex sentences and are ranked according to the means of expressing concessiveness.
