Karpenko N. Structure, semantics and functions of undividable verb-noun combinations in the contemporary Ukrainian language.

The object is undividable verb-noun combinations that may correspond semantically to single verbs or adjectives, verbals or adverbs as a nominal part of the compound predicate, and verb-noun combinations that have no correspondents but are thought of as single units; the aim is to research the structure, semantics and usage of undividable verb-noun combinations in the functional varieties of the contemporary Ukrainian language to define their style and stylistic peculiarities with parallel more accurate definition of their name, status and role in the sentence; methods: descriptive – to represent the main material of the research paper, transformative – to determine the semantics of units compared, contextual – to define the functions of the combinations analyzed, partially the method of calculations and the comparative research way are used; the novelty is, firstly, in a precise defining of the set of nominal components of undividable combinations by origin (besides verbal and nouns proper, there found those of adjectival and verbals origin) and determining of the syntactic role of these units that function not only as simple verbal predicates, components of the compound verbal predicate, the object and the main part of impersonal sentences, but also as the main part of infinitive, definite- and indefinite-personal sentences; secondly, it’s the first attempt in the Ukrainian linguistics to research the functions of undividable verb-noun combinations in all the styles of the contemporary Ukrainian language, each of them is studied from the point of view of verb and noun groups of different origin, style and stylistic functions of the combinations, the determination of the limits of their spreading in texts of functional varieties of the Ukrainian language; results: the features of undividable verb-noun combinations are determined as compared with phraseological units and free combinations, the competence of the name ‘undividable verb-noun combinations’ is proved, semantic-stylistic relations between an undividable combination and its equivalents are characterized, the peculiarities of the functioning of undividable verb-noun combinations are analyzed in the texts of different styles; the field is syntaxic, stylistic.
