The thesis deals with the contrastive analysis of predicative-attributive constructions (PAC) in present-day English and Ukrainian. PAC is a structural-semantic minimum of a simple sentence used either on its own or as a part of composite sentence. On the semantic level PAC comprises the subject and the predicate denoting an attribute (a trait or a property) of the subject. On the structural-syntactic level PAC includes components representing the semantic subject and predicate. The structural classification of the English and Ukrainian units under study has been carried out, the ways of formal representation of their semantic predicate being its basis. 7 types of PAC semantic predicate representation on the syntactic level have been distinguished, six of which are shared by PAC of both languages, which testifies to the isomorphism of the languages of comparison. Allomorphic features of the English and Ukrainian constructions in question are manifested in the frequency of certain structural PAC types occurrence and in the absence of PAC with the structure of one-member sentence in the English language. The semantic analysis of PAC based on the types of the subject characteristics expressed by the semantic predicate on the denotative level has made it possible to distinguish 4 semantic types and 10 semantic subtypes of the constructions common to both languages. Apart from this the two languages reveal certain similarity in the frequency of PAC occurrence and in the main means of their manifestation on the structural level.
