Essay

Present thesis is a complex (i.e. semantic, formative, structural, functional, diachronic and synchronic) survey of the prefix and confix word-formation of adjectives in the history of Ukrainian language. Derivatives found in the memos of 11-20th centuries are classified by the word-formative formants with particular lexical and formative types (LFT) being distinguished within the limits of each formant. Typology of word-formative conjunctions of formants with formative bases is clarified, their semantic and functional purposefulness in different chronologic periods is demonstrated, the basic word-formative models of derivative prefix and confix adjectives are described. As a result of substantial analysis, the time of genesis, development stages, structural and semantic peculiarities of each LFT have been traced, its productivity/non-productivity has been found, the further fate of derivatives in the modern Ukrainian literature language and territorial dialects has been traced as compared with similar formations in other Slav languages.
