Essay

To study the perception of geographic phenomena such as landscapes, regions, environmental problems the special methodology and techniques were developed. The perceptions of these phenomena have various forms and are connected with each other. Basic perceptual features of landscape most responsible for its preference were indentified, namely: complexity, mystery, coherence, spaciousness, identifiability. At that a preference of landscape is regarded as its integral perceptually-cognitive characteristic. Personal perception of regional differentiation of an area is represented with a map of its mental regionalization, while group perception with a map of vernacular regions of an area. In the perception of environmental problems there is dependence between the level of their perceived importance and level of their sensory obviousness. The powerful instruments to introduce the regularities of people's perception of geographic phenomena into practice are connected with landscape planning, creating positive regional image, setting priorities for regional environmental policy.
